Victory by God’s Grace

9"Listen, O Israel! Today you are about to cross the Jordan River to take over the land belonging to nations much greater and more powerful than you. They live in cities with walls that reach to the sky!H8085H3478H5674H3383H3117H935H3423H1471H1419H6099H5892H1419H1219H8064 2The people are strong and tall—descendants of the famous Anakite giants. You've heard the saying, 'Who can stand up to the Anakites?'H5971H1419H7311H1121H6062H3045H8085H3320H6440H1121H6061 3But recognize today that the LORD your God is the one who will cross over ahead of you like a devouring fire to destroy them. He will subdue them so that you will quickly conquer them and drive them out, just as the LORD has promised.H3045H3117H3068H430H5674H6440H398H784H8045H3665H6440H3423H6H4118H3068H1696 4"After the LORD your God has done this for you, don't say in your hearts, 'The LORD has given us this land because we are such good people!' No, it is because of the wickedness of the other nations that he is pushing them out of your way.H559H3824H3068H430H1920H6440H559H6666H3068H935H3423H776H7564H1471H3068H3423H6440 5It is not because you are so good or have such integrity that you are about to occupy their land. The LORD your God will drive these nations out ahead of you only because of their wickedness, and to fulfill the oath he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.H6666H3476H3824H935H3423H776H7564H1471H3068H430H3423H6440H6965H1697H3068H7650H1H85H3327H3290 6You must recognize that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land because you are good, for you are not—you are a stubborn people.H3045H3068H430H5414H2896H776H3423H6666H6203H7186H5971

Remembering the Gold Calf

7"Remember and never forget how angry you made the LORD your God out in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until now, you have been constantly rebelling against him.H2142H7911H3068H430H7107H4057H4480H3117H3318H776H4714H935H4725H4784H5973H3068 8Even at Mount Sinaic you made the LORD so angry he was ready to destroy you.H2722H7107H3068H7107H3068H599H8045 9This happened when I was on the mountain receiving the tablets of stone inscribed with the words of the covenant that the LORD had made with you. I was there for forty days and forty nights, and all that time I ate no food and drank no water.H5927H2022H3947H3871H68H3871H1285H3068H3772H3427H2022H705H3117H705H3915H398H3899H8354H4325 10The LORD gave me the two tablets on which God had written with his own finger all the words he had spoken to you from the heart of the fire when you were assembled at the mountain.H3068H5414H8147H3871H68H3789H676H430H1697H3068H1696H2022H8432H784H3117H6951 11"At the end of the forty days and nights, the LORD handed me the two stone tablets inscribed with the words of the covenant.H7093H705H3117H705H3915H3068H5414H8147H3871H68H3871H1285 12Then the LORD said to me, 'Get up! Go down immediately, for the people you brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live! They have melted gold and made an idol for themselves!'H3068H559H6965H3381H4118H5971H3318H4714H7843H4118H5493H1870H6680H6213H4541 13"The LORD also said to me, 'I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are.H3068H559H559H7200H5971H6203H7186H5971 14Leave me alone so I may destroy them and erase their name from under heaven. Then I will make a mighty nation of your descendants, a nation larger and more powerful than they are.'H7503H8045H4229H8034H8064H6213H854H1471H6099H7227 15"So while the mountain was blazing with fire I turned and came down, holding in my hands the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant.H6437H3381H2022H2022H1197H784H8147H3871H1285H8147H3027 16There below me I could see that you had sinned against the LORD your God. You had melted gold and made a calf idol for yourselves. How quickly you had turned away from the path the LORD had commanded you to follow!H7200H2398H3068H430H6213H4541H5695H5493H4118H1870H3068H6680 17So I took the stone tablets and threw them to the ground, smashing them before your eyes.H8610H8147H3871H7993H5921H8147H3027H7665H5869 18"Then, as before, I threw myself down before the LORD for forty days and nights. I ate no bread and drank no water because of the great sin you had committed by doing what the LORD hated, provoking him to anger.H5307H6440H3068H7223H705H3117H705H3915H398H3899H8354H4325H2403H2398H6213H7451H5869H3068H3707 19I feared that the furious anger of the LORD, which turned him against you, would drive him to destroy you. But again he listened to me.H3025H6440H639H2534H3068H7107H8045H3068H8085H6471 20The LORD was so angry with Aaron that he wanted to destroy him, too. But I prayed for Aaron, and the LORD spared him.H3068H3966H599H175H8045H6419H175H6256 21I took your sin—the calf you had made—and I melted it down in the fire and ground it into fine dust. Then I threw the dust into the stream that flows down the mountain.H3947H2403H5695H6213H8313H784H3807H2912H3190H1854H6083H7993H6083H5158H3381H2022 22"You also made the LORD angry at Taberahc, Massah, and Kibroth-hattaavah.H8404H4532H6914H3068H7107 23And at Kadesh-barnea the LORD sent you out with this command: 'Go up and take over the land I have given you.' But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God and refused to put your trust in him or obey him.H3068H7971H6947H559H5927H3423H776H5414H4784H6310H3068H430H539H8085H6963 24Yes, you have been rebelling against the LORD as long as I have known you.H4784H3068H3117H3045 25"That is why I threw myself down before the LORD for forty days and nights—for the LORD said he would destroy you.H5307H6440H3068H705H3117H705H3915H5307H3068H559H8045 26I prayed to the LORD and said, 'O Sovereign LORD, do not destroy them. They are your own people. They are your special possession, whom you redeemed from Egypt by your mighty power and your strong hand.H6419H3068H559H136H3069H7843H5971H5159H6299H1433H3318H4714H2389H3027 27Please overlook the stubbornness and the awful sin of these people, and remember instead your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.H2142H5650H85H3327H3290H6437H7190H5971H7562H2403 28If you destroy these people, the Egyptians will say, "The Israelites died because the LORD wasn't able to bring them to the land he had promised to give them." Or they might say, "He destroyed them because he hated them; he deliberately took them into the wilderness to slaughter them."H776H3318H559H3068H3201H935H776H1696H8135H3318H4191H4057 29But they are your people and your special possession, whom you brought out of Egypt by your great strength and powerful arm.'H5971H5159H3318H1419H3581H5186H2220

A New Copy of the Covenant

10"At that time the LORD said to me, 'Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones. Also make a wooden Ark—a sacred chest to store them in. Come up to me on the mountain,H6256H3068H559H6458H8147H3871H68H7223H5927H2022H6213H727H6086 2and I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the ones you smashed. Then place the tablets in the Ark.'H3789H3871H1697H7223H3871H7665H7760H727 3"So I made an Ark of acacia wood and cut two stone tablets like the first two. Then I went up the mountain with the tablets in my hand.H6213H727H7848H6086H6458H8147H3871H68H7223H5927H2022H8147H3871H3027 4Once again the LORD wrote the Ten Commandmentsc on the tablets and gave them to me. They were the same words the LORD had spoken to you from the heart of the fire on the day you were assembled at the foot of the mountain.H3789H3871H7223H4385H6235H1697H3068H1696H2022H8432H784H3117H6951H3068H5414 5Then I turned and came down the mountain and placed the tablets in the Ark of the Covenant, which I had made, just as the LORD commanded me. And the tablets are still there in the Ark."H6437H3381H2022H7760H3871H727H6213H3068H6680 6(The people of Israel set out from the wells of the people of Jaakanc and traveled to Moserah, where Aaron died and was buried. His son Eleazar ministered as high priest in his place.H1121H3478H5265H885H4149H175H4191H6912H499H1121H3547 7Then they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from there to Jotbathah, a land with many brooks and streams.H5265H1412H1412H3193H776H5158H4325 8At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of the LORD's Covenant, and to stand before the LORD as his ministers, and to pronounce blessings in his name. These are their duties to this day.H6256H3068H914H7626H3878H5375H727H1285H3068H5975H6440H3068H8334H1288H8034H3117 9That is why the Levites have no share of property or possession of land among the other Israelite tribes. The LORD himself is their special possession, as the LORD your God told them.)H3878H2506H5159H251H3068H5159H3068H430H1696 10"As for me, I stayed on the mountain in the LORD's presence for forty days and nights, as I had done the first time. And once again the LORD listened to my pleas and agreed not to destroy you.H5975H2022H7223H3117H705H3117H705H3915H3068H8085H6471H3068H14H7843 11Then the LORD said to me, 'Get up and resume the journey, and lead the people to the land I swore to give to their ancestors, so they may take possession of it.'H3068H559H6965H3212H4550H6440H5971H935H3423H776H7650H1H5414

A Call to Love and Obedience

12"And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul.H3478H3068H430H7592H3372H3068H430H3212H1870H157H5647H3068H430H3824H5315 13And you must always obey the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.H8104H4687H3068H2708H6680H3117H2896 14"Look, the highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the LORD your God.H8064H8064H8064H3068H430H776 15Yet the LORD chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you, their descendants, above all other nations, as is evident today.H3068H2836H1H157H977H2233H310H5971H3117 16Therefore, change your heartsc and stop being stubborn.H4135H6190H3824H6203H7185 17"For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed.H3068H430H430H430H113H113H1419H410H1368H3372H5375H6440H3947H7810 18He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing.H6213H4941H3490H490H157H1616H5414H3899H8071 19So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.H157H1616H1616H776H4714 20You must fear the LORD your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone.H3372H3068H430H5647H1692H7650H8034 21He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes.H8416H430H6213H1419H3372H5869H7200 22When your ancestors went down into Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky!H1H3381H4714H7657H5315H3068H430H7760H3556H8064H7230

11"You must love the LORD your God and obey all his requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands.H157H3068H430H8104H4931H2708H4941H4687H3117 2Keep in mind that I am not talking now to your children, who have never experienced the discipline of the LORD your God or seen his greatness and his strong hand and powerful arm.H3045H3117H1121H3045H7200H4148H3068H430H1433H2389H3027H5186H2220 3They didn't see the miraculous signs and wonders he performed in Egypt against Pharaoh and all his land.H226H4639H6213H8432H4714H6547H4428H4714H776 4They didn't see what the LORD did to the armies of Egypt and to their horses and chariots—how he drowned them in the Red Seac as they were chasing you. He destroyed them, and they have not recovered to this very day!H6213H2428H4714H5483H7393H4325H5488H3220H6687H6440H7291H310H3068H6H3117 5"Your children didn't see how the LORD cared for you in the wilderness until you arrived here.H6213H4057H935H4725 6They didn't see what he did to Dathan and Abiram (the sons of Eliab, a descendant of Reuben) when the earth opened its mouth in the Israelite camp and swallowed them, along with their households and tents and every living thing that belonged to them.H6213H1885H48H1121H446H1121H7205H776H6475H6310H1104H1004H168H3351H7272H7130H3478 7But you have seen the LORD perform all these mighty deeds with your own eyes!H5869H7200H1419H4639H3068H6213

The Blessings of Obedience

8"Therefore, be careful to obey every command I am giving you today, so you may have strength to go in and take over the land you are about to enter.H8104H4687H834H6680H3117H2388H935H3423H776H5674H3423 9If you obey, you will enjoy a long life in the land the LORD swore to give to your ancestors and to you, their descendants—a land flowing with milk and honey!H748H3117H127H3068H7650H1H5414H2233H776H2100H2461H1706 10For the land you are about to enter and take over is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, where you planted your seed and made irrigation ditches with your foot as in a vegetable garden.H776H935H3423H776H4714H3318H2232H2233H8248H7272H1588H3419 11Rather, the land you will soon take over is a land of hills and valleys with plenty of rain—H776H5674H3423H776H2022H1237H8354H4325H4306H8064 12a land that the LORD your God cares for. He watches over it through each season of the year!H776H3068H430H1875H5869H3068H430H8548H7225H8141H319H8141 13"If you carefully obey all the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the LORD your God and serve him with all your heart and soul,H8085H8085H4687H6680H3117H157H3068H430H5647H3824H5315 14then he will send the rains in their proper seasons—the early and late rains—so you can bring in your harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil.H5414H4306H776H6256H3138H4456H622H1715H8492H3323 15He will give you lush pastureland for your livestock, and you yourselves will have all you want to eat.H5414H6212H7704H929H398H7646 16"But be careful. Don't let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the LORD and serve and worship other gods.H8104H3824H6601H5493H5647H312H430H7812 17If you do, the LORD's anger will burn against you. He will shut up the sky and hold back the rain, and the ground will fail to produce its harvests. Then you will quickly die in that good land the LORD is giving you.H3068H639H2734H6113H8064H4306H127H5414H2981H6H4120H2896H776H3068H5414 18"So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.H7760H1697H3824H5315H7194H226H3027H2903H5869 19Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.H3925H1121H1696H3427H1004H3212H1870H7901H6965 20Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,H3789H4201H1004H8179 21so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors.H3117H7235H3117H1121H127H3068H7650H1H5414H3117H8064H776 22"Be careful to obey all these commands I am giving you. Show love to the LORD your God by walking in his ways and holding tightly to him.H8104H8104H4687H6680H6213H157H3068H430H3212H1870H1692 23Then the LORD will drive out all the nations ahead of you, though they are much greater and stronger than you, and you will take over their land.H3068H3423H1471H6440H3423H1419H1471H6099 24Wherever you set foot, that land will be yours. Your frontiers will stretch from the wilderness in the south to Lebanon in the north, and from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the westc.H4725H3709H7272H1869H4057H3844H5104H5104H6578H314H3220H1366 25No one will be able to stand against you, for the LORD your God will cause the people to fear and dread you, as he promised, wherever you go in the whole land.H376H3320H6440H3068H430H5414H6343H4172H6440H776H1869H1696 26"Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse!H7200H5414H6440H3117H1293H7045 27You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today.H1293H8085H4687H3068H430H6680H3117 28But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the LORD your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.H7045H8085H4687H3068H430H5493H1870H6680H3117H3212H310H312H430H3045 29"When the LORD your God brings you into the land and helps you take possession of it, you must pronounce the blessing at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount Ebal.H3068H430H935H776H935H3423H5414H1293H2022H1630H7045H2022H5858 30(These two mountains are west of the Jordan River in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Jordan Valleyc, near the town of Gilgal, not far from the oaks of Moreh.)H5676H3383H310H1870H8121H3996H776H3669H3427H6160H4136H1537H681H436H4176 31For you are about to cross the Jordan River to take over the land the LORD your God is giving you. When you take that land and are living in it,H5674H3383H935H3423H776H3068H430H5414H3423H3427 32you must be careful to obey all the decrees and regulations I am giving you today.H8104H6213H2706H4941H5414H6440H3117
